How Big Should Your Chicken Coop Be?

Inside the coop: 3 to 4 square feet per standard-size bird, halved for bantams, a quarter more for large breeds like Jersey Giants and Brahmas. The run: 8 to 10 square feet per bird for a fenced daily run, 15 if the flock never free-ranges, and about 4 if the run is only a loafing area because the birds roam most of the day. Nesting boxes: one per 3 to 4 laying hens (roosters need none), 12x12x12 inches for standard breeds. Roost: 8 to 12 inches of bar per bird.
